1959: Buddy Holly (news), Ritchie Valens (news) and the Big Bopper made what would be their last public appearance, in Clear Lake, Iowa. They died in a plane crash the next day.
1964: Thousands of screaming fans greeted The Beatles as they arrived at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport for their first U.S. tour.
1964: The governor of Indiana declared the song "Louie Louie" by the Kingsmen pornographic and asked radio stations to ban it. An FCC (news - web sites) investigation concluded the record to be "unintelligible at any speed we played it."
1973: The NBC-TV rock show "Midnight Special" debuted, with Helen Reddy as host.
1980: Pink Floyd performed "The Wall" for the first time in the United States.
